A former Harambee Stars coach has expressed his reservations over Benni McCarthy’s move to recall veteran midfielder Victor Wanyama from international retirement.

Victor Wanyama’s return to the Harambee Stars squad continues to elicit mixed reactions after he was called out of international retirement by coach Benni McCarthy.

Wanyama was named in the Kenya provisional squad set to play Chad in friendly matches next month, making a return to the national team fold since his retirement in September 2021.

However, his inclusion has divided opinion among Kenyans with some feeling he should give way to younger players while others consider his experience vital to the squad.

One man who knows Wanyama too well is former Harambee Stars coach Jacob ‘Ghost’ Mulee, who handed the defensive midfielder his national team debut as a teenager in 2007, and according to him, the 33-year-old has done his time and can only come back to motivate the youngsters.

“Unless he [Wanyama] is coming back to give the other players motivation, because he has enough experience, but about playing, I do not think it will be good for the team,” Mulee said on Radio Jambo where he works as a morning show co-host.

“Because right now in many teams, young players are the ones being used so if he has come with his experience to give advice to the rest, then that is okay.

“I am the one who gave him his national team debut in 2007 when he was 15 and so he has served this country for a lot of years and we respect that. Anyway, it is McCarthy to decide,” Mulee further said.

Mulee, who worked as Harambee Stars coach in five different stints, feels coach McCarthy should be building a team for the future with young players at the core of it.

He is, however, calling for respect towards Wanyama, whose inclusion in the squad he has defended as being the coach’s and not the player’s decision.

“Maybe he [Wanyama] still feels he can contribute on the pitch and if that is the case, then it is up to the coach to make the decision. Coach Benni McCarthy has named a provisional squad, it is not Victor Wanyama who has forced himself into the team,” added the former Tusker coach, who guided Kenya to the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia.

Wanyama made his Harambee Stars debut in May 2007 during a friendly against Nigeria aged just 15, and went on to make 64 appearances while scoring six goals, with his highlight being to captain Kenya at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

He retired in September 2021, having been overlooked in national team selection, but there have been a number personalities calling for his return until McCarthy convinced him this month.

The former Celtic, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur and CF Montreal midfielder joined Scottish second tier side Dunfermline Athletic on a short-term deal in March 2025 and is in talks over a possible extension after the club survived relegation.
