Kenya U20 coach Anthony Akhulia has identified key players from his squad who he feels are ripe for a place in Benni McCarthy’s Harambee Stars team.

Following their impressive performance at the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations, a number of Kenyan players have been reported to have attracted interest from clubs.

Rising Stars were knocked out at the group stage following defeats to Morocco (3-2) and Tunisia (3-1) before ending with a 2-2 stalemate against Nigeria but there were some players who grabbed the chance to showcase their skills.

While some feel they are ripe for paid ranks in Kenya and abroad, their coach Anthony Akhulia also believes some of them are good enough to be promoted to the senior national team Harambee Stars currently under the stewardship of South African legend Benni McCarthy.

“I can’t speak for the senior team head coach but I am confident that some boys have shown their abilities and that they can challenge to get on top there,” Akhulia told Telecomasia.net.

“If you look at Lawrence (Okoth) who scored in all the games, a player like Manzur (Okwaro) who was outstanding in defense, the likes of Wangaya (Kevin) who was named man of the match against Nigeria and many more, we have players who can compete at the top.

How Did the Rising Stars Trio Perform at AFCON U20?

“They have the quality and the confidence. I believe that if we can blend the youth and senior players, we will have a very good squad for CHAN. I am confident we will see quite a number of them called up.”

Akhulia’s seal of approval comes days after McCarthy also expressed his delight at the U20 players from their AFCON performance, saying he now has a big pond to fish from as far as national team selection is concerned.

“When I watched the U20 AFCON, I saw some real potential from the squad in the Kenyan U20 national team with a lot of good players coming through so I have got a big pot of players to work with,” McCarthy told Sporty TV last week.

Of the three players named by Akhulia, Okwaro has already won McCarthy’s trust as he was selected for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in March, coming on as a late substitute against Gabon, when Kenya lost 2-1.

Ouma, meanwhile, has won plaudits for his great finishing, scoring two goals in three games, while Wangaya was the midfield lynchpin for Kenya and also weighed in with a goal and assist, leading to reported interest from clubs in Italy, Croatia, Georgia and Turkey.
