“I’ve spoken to him (McCarthy) a few times, and he’s been trying to persuade me to come back,” Wanyama said in an interview with the BBC.

“He’s a top coach, having worked at Manchester United. He brings a lot of experience and is exactly what Kenya needs right now. I’m giving it serious thought, and I’ll be making an announcement very soon.”

Appointed just months ago, Benni McCarthy has wasted no time in reshaping Kenya’s national team.

The Bafana Bafana legend, best known for his stint on the Manchester United coaching staff and South African side AmaZulu and Cape Town City, made his debut during the March international break.

McCarthy's initial squad was a blend of internationally based professionals and a few promising local talents like Kenya Police midfielder Mohammed Bajaber.

Despite a thrilling 3-3 draw against Gambia, a narrow 2-1 loss to Gabon saw Kenya's hopes of qualifying for the World Cup suffer a blow.

However, McCarthy has since shifted focus to the upcoming 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) scheduled for August and the long-term target of qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Wanyama’s potential return could prove pivotal as McCarthy looks to build a squad capable of competing at the highest level in Africa.

With over a decade of international experience, including a stint as captain and previous appearances in the AFCON in 2019, Wanyama’s leadership and composure in midfield may offer the team much-needed stability.

Adding to his resume are very reputable stints in the English Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton.

For now, fans will eagerly await Wanyama’s final decision, which could signal the beginning of a new chapter for Harambee Stars under the stewardship of McCarthy.
