Wanyama, who has already declared a desire to take up coaching after hanging up his boots, is set to achieve a major milestone on his journey to actualising his dream.

Victor Wanyama, one of Kenya’s most celebrated football exports, has officially taken his first major step towards a career in management by enrolling for the UEFA B Diploma coaching course under the Northern Ireland Football Federation.

The former Harambee Stars captain, who recently played for Scottish Championship side Dunfermline Athletic FC, began the course on Monday.

Wanyama is joined in the programme by several familiar faces, including his former Southampton teammate, retired Dutch defender Jos Hooiveld. The two reunited for a photo, with Hooiveld sharing it on Instagram and captioning it, “Going for the badges with some old friends.”

Former US international Jimmy Conrad is also part of the class, humorously posting, “Day 1 of UEFA coaching in the books. I can’t feel my legs, but I had a good time.”

Wanyama’s latest move is in line with his long-expressed ambition to transition from playing to coaching.

“I think I will do that, yes—become a coach,” he told FIFA Media in a previous interview. “I’ve worked with some great coaches. I look at how they see the game, and I’ve tried to take in everything.”

The ex-Celtic and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder has always spoken of his desire to learn and evolve.

“I believe one day I could be a good manager. My motivation is always to learn new things. Football is a game of learning—nobody knows it all. Whatever I do in football, I just always want to be the best I can be,” he added.

What UEFA B License entails

The UEFA B Licence is a comprehensive coaching qualification designed to bridge the gap between grassroots and professional coaching. The course includes 120 hours of learning—95 hours of structured instruction and at least 25 hours of practical experience within a club environment.

Upon completion, coaches are qualified to manage youth teams (up to age 16), amateur clubs, or serve as assistants at professional level.

It also fulfills the minimum requirements to work within Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP) academies and acts as a prerequisite for pursuing the more advanced UEFA A Licence.

Although Wanyama is laying down the foundations for his coaching career, he is not eady to call time on his playing days just yet. Speaking recently after signing for Dunfermline, the 32-year-old expressed a desire to return for another season.

“Hopefully—hopefully we’ll see. I’ve really enjoyed my short time here, and it would be great to return and continue the journey,” Wanyama said. “I’d love to leave a legacy at Dunfermline, perhaps even help the club rise to a higher league.”

As Wanyama balances life on the pitch with preparations for a future on the touchline, Kenya’s football fans will be watching closely—hopeful that the midfield maestro is shaping up to become the nation’s next great tactician.
