Tragic passing of a Bahir Dar City midfielder comes a month after his wedding, sparking deep sorrow across the Ethiopian football community.

Ethiopia international Alelegn Azene tragically passed away on Wednesday in what has been reported as a suicide.

This heartbreaking news comes just a month after the celebrated midfielder's vibrant wedding, leaving his family, friends, and fans in profound shock and grief.

The cause of death has not yet been officially disclosed; however, numerous reports suggest that Azene took his own life.

The Ethiopian Football Federation expressed its devastation over the news.

"The Ethiopian Football Federation is deeply shocked and heartbroken, expressing profound sorrow over the loss to his family, friends, and relatives. Condolences have been extended to his teammates and the wider football community," part of statement reads.

Azene, hailing from the town of Arbaminch, began his football career at Arba Minch City Football Club, where he played from the 2016/17 to the 2018/19 seasons.

His journey through Ethiopian football saw him move to Hawassa City for two seasons, before eventually joining Bahir Dar City two years ago.

Azene played a pivotal role in leading the Waves of Tana to a historic second-place finish in the 2022/23 Ethiopian Premier League season and represented the club in the Confederations Cup.

Throughout the 2022/23 season, Azene played 27 games for Bahir Dar City, scoring five goals, and continued to demonstrate his prowess on the field in the current season, with one goal in 22 games.

His stellar performances at the club level earned him national honors, making him a key player for Ethiopia's national teams, both the Olympic team and under coach Wubetu Abate.
