A staunch AFC Leopards supporter, Rigathi Gachagua has been blocked from Kasarani amid CHAN 2024 prep, sparking political-sporting tensions.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is at the center of a dispute after Sports Kenya blocked his new political outfit from using the Kasarani Indoor Arena for its official launch next week — sparking uproar among football fans and political observers alike.

Gachagua's Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) was set to be unveiled at the Kasarani facility on June 4, 2025.

The venue, a sporting hub that has hosted countless matches and national fixtures, was reportedly confirmed and invoiced for the event before the booking was abruptly revoked.

“We regret to inform you that the venue will not be available due to prior bookings by sports teams. We are also not taking further bookings due to preparations for the upcoming Championships for African Nations (CHAN 2025) to be hosted within the complex,” stated a letter from Sports Kenya dated May 21.

Kasarani: Ground Zero for CHAN or Politics?

The CHAN 2024 tournament — pushed to later this year — has thrown Kenya’s top stadiums into overhaul mode.

Kasarani is central to those efforts, but the timing of the DCP cancellation has raised eyebrows. The party claims the excuse is a smokescreen for political interference.

“The indefinite venue cancellation by Sports Kenya is an affront to democracy and an attempt to deter the DCP party launch by the government.

"The Kasarani gymnasium facility (indoor arena auditorium) is a public facility which every Kenyan has a right to access and utilise for the public good,” said DCP Secretary General Hezron Obaga in a strongly worded statement as per Citizen Digital.

The party also revealed that Sports Kenya had advised them to reschedule to June 3, 2025, and issued an invoice of Kshs. 3.7 million. But that agreement was scrapped just days later, with no future bookings being accepted.

The political storm comes amid CAF’s concerns over Kenya’s readiness to co-host CHAN 2024 with Uganda and Tanzania.

Earlier inspections by CAF officials flagged the quality of the turf at Kasarani and Nyayo Stadium as below international standards — casting doubt on the country’s ability to deliver.

Despite the issues, Sports CS Salim Mvurya insists all is well.

“The latest inspection went well, and we are on track to host a successful CHAN tournament,” he said after CAF’s latest visit.

For now, the DCP launch is postponed, and the party is hunting for a private venue.

Meanwhile, CHAN’s ticking clock and Kenya’s readiness remain under the spotlight — with both football and politics converging under one roof.
