Ruben Amorim: 3 Key Reasons Manchester United Will Benefit from Smaller Squad Next Season

Ruben Amorim believes a smaller squad without European football will benefit Manchester United’s tactical clarity, stability, and team development.

Before the start of the 2025/26 campaign, Ruben Amorim has made it clear that Manchester United’s lack of Champions League football could be a blessing in disguise.

The Portuguese manager, who is preparing for his first full season at Old Trafford, believes a leaner squad will enable better control, unity, and improvement within the team.

Manchester United endured a historically poor season, finishing 15th in the Premier League and missing out on all European competitions after a crushing defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final.

However, Amorim is turning this setback into an opportunity, stressing that with no European distractions, the club can rebuild with precision and focus.

“We always prepare two plans,” said Amorim as per Sky Sports.

“With and without the Champions League. Without the Champions League, we also don't need a big squad. We can control the squad in a better way.”

3. Reduced Fixture Load Will Help Squad Stability

Without Champions League or Europa League fixtures next season, the Red Devils will face a significantly reduced schedule. This presents a rare chance for Amorim to cultivate consistency in tactics and personnel.

Unlike previous seasons, where United juggled multiple competitions, the focus can now shift to domestic performance without the risk of fatigue and frequent rotations.

A smaller squad means fewer players to manage and a tighter-knit group with better chemistry. This could help instill Amorim's philosophy faster, especially with players like Matheus Cunha potentially coming in and Academy prospects being integrated.

“It was the past, so it can be the future,” Amorim added.

“It can’t change much because of Financial Fair Play... so we are prepared.”

2. Tactical Clarity and Team Development

One major advantage of operating with a smaller squad is the ability to reinforce tactical principles more effectively. With fewer players to rotate in and out, Amorim can embed his system deeper into the squad's core.

Additionally, players will have more consistent roles and clearer responsibilities on the pitch.

By focusing on quality over quantity, Amorim is prioritizing internal development. That means giving more time to Academy talents and improving current players, rather than relying on a spending spree.

“So, I don’t need rest, I just need to prepare for the next season,” said the United manager.

“I’m excited at the same moment.”

This approach aligns with Amorim's long-term vision of building a solid foundation rather than chasing short-term success. A committed, cohesive squad is far more likely to rebound strongly in the Premier League.

1. Core Leadership Will Drive Team Spirit

With a trimmed squad, the role of leaders like Bruno Fernandes becomes even more crucial.

Amorim stated the importance of keeping Fernandes, amid speculation about a possible move away from Old Trafford. The midfielder’s influence, both on and off the pitch, will be central to the team's rebuild.

“You can see by the performance, the leadership, the passion he has for the games,” Amorim said.

He’s really important for what we want to build with this team.”

Retaining Fernandes sends a clear message that United are building a team around dependable, high-quality players. His presence ensures that even in tough moments, there’s a figure who embraces responsibility—something Amorim sees as vital to shaping the team’s identity.

In closing, Ruben Amorim believes that not participating in Europe next season offers a golden opportunity.

“It is a good thing for us to take advantage of not having European games,” he noted.

Having a streamlined squad, strong leadership, and tactical clarity, Manchester United may be poised for a quietly effective resurgence.
