Linton Maina could be close to returning for FC Cologne after missing the loss to Borussia Dortmund in their opening Bundesliga fixture last week.

FC Cologne boss Steffen Baumgart has provided a positive injury update on Kenyan Winger Linton Maina ahead of his side’s Bundesliga clash against Wolfsburg this weekend.

Maina has not featured for Cologne since suffering an illness in preseason, but returned to training two days before their league opener against Borussia Dortmund last week, a game they lost 1-0.

Baumgart has however, given a positive injury update on the unpredictable left winger. Which could suggest he could be back to action before too long.

“Davie Selke trained normally and will play. Steffen Tigges and Linton Maina did what was important to us. Mark Uth will continue to fail. I have the feeling that everyone is doing well, which makes it all the more difficult for me to make decisions about who will be in the squad and who will not," Baumgart said.

The news suggests Maina could be back for their third Bundesliga clash of the season against 2022 Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt if he does not make the squad for the Wolfsburg fixture.

Maina had a solid if not spectacular first season for Koln after signing for the Bundesliga outfit at the beginning of last season.

He clocked 2177 Bundesliga minutes under his belt, starting 26 times out of a possible 34 games. He scored seven goals and assisted another seven times.

Maina is born to a German mother and a Kenyan father. Having played for Germany up to the Under 20s level, he could still feature for Harambee Stars in the future.
