Wydad Casablanca parted ways with Rulani Mokwena after a trophyless season, prompting the coach to reflect on his future.

South African tactician Rulani Mokwena has broken his silence just days after parting ways with Moroccan giants Wydad AC.

The gaffer's departure was confirmed on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, after a brief period of special leave granted in late April amid a disappointing run of form for the club.

Despite an underwhelming campaign that saw Wydad finish third in the Botola Pro League with 54 points—16 behind champions RS Berkane—Mokwena maintained a respectable record of 14 wins in 35 matches.

However, the club went on a three-match winning streak under interim leadership during Mokwena’s absence, sealing a return to CAF Interclub competition.

In a heartfelt farewell message to the Wydad faithful, Mokwena expressed pride in his time at the helm, while also revealing that he is considering his next move in football.

“With heartfelt gratitude, I’m stepping away from my role at Wydad AC to embark on the next chapter of my coaching journey,” said Mokwena.

“I’m immensely proud of what we achieved together. Rebuilding a united team that returned to African competition–where this great club belongs.”

Mokwena's departure marks the end of a turbulent season filled with ups and downs. From a five-match winning streak that had fans dreaming of silverware to a damaging defeat to MAS that contributed to his special leave.

A Passion for Player Development

Even as speculation mounts about his next destination, Mokwena remains focused on the aspects of the game that matter most to him—player development and long-term football projects.

“Despite challenges, including our unfortunate defeat to MAS, there were many great moments, like our five-match winning streak and some great football. I think this lays a strong foundation for future success,” he continued.

I’m deeply thankful to this incredible group of players, humble, passionate, and talented, who made this journey special. With patience, this group, led by a remarkable President, can achieve greatness.”

Mokwena’s reputation on the continent remains solid, and it hasn’t taken long for his name to be linked with several high-profile roles.

Rumours have emerged suggesting a possible return to Orlando Pirates, following the recent departure of Jose Riveiro. But he may not be done with North African football just yet.

Linked with Zamalek and Other Roles

According to Egyptian media outlet Radio Mars, Egyptian giants Zamalek SC have extended an offer to Mokwena as they seek to replace the recently departed Jose Peseiro.

The Cairo-based club is reportedly compiling a shortlist of foreign candidates, with Mokwena and fellow South African coach Pitso Mosimane among the leading names.

“As I pursue new opportunities in football management, I carry forward great experiences and my commitment to beautiful football. Developing players and clubs and building projects rooted in passion and competitive success. Thank you for your incredible support. Go on and reclaim your position as one of Africa’s greatest clubs.”

Having lasted just one season at Wydad, Mokwena’s focus now turns to the next chapter of a coaching career that continues to evolve.
