Former Arsenal footballer Jay Emmanuel-Thomas has admitted to orchestrating a $800,000 cannabis smuggling operation from Thailand to the UK.

Former Premier League forward Jay Emmanuel-Thomas has admitted to playing a central role in a sophisticated drug smuggling scheme involving 60 kilograms of cannabis, valued at around $800,000.

The UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) has revealed that the 34-year-old orchestrated the importation of the drugs from Thailand to the UK, using recruited couriers in an attempt to evade detection.

According to the NCA, Emmanuel-Thomas acted as the key intermediary between cannabis suppliers in Thailand and drug distributors in the UK.

According to reports, the English footballer recruited two women to fly to Thailand and return with the illicit cargo disguised in suitcases.

The women were arrested upon arrival from Bangkok and initially charged with drug smuggling.

However, they were later acquitted after the court accepted that they believed they were transporting gold, not cannabis.

The NCA warned of the dangers of becoming involved with organized criminal networks in light of the footballers plight.

“Organised criminals like Thomas can be very persuasive and offer payment to couriers. But the risk of getting caught is very high and it simply isn’t worth it,” a spokesperson said as per CNN.

The case was adjourned at Chelmsford Crown Court on Wednesday, with sentencing to be scheduled at a later date.

Emmanuel-Thomas faces a maximum sentence of up to 14 years in prison under UK law for cannabis importation.
