The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner named his iconic header against Manchester United in the 2009 UEFA Champions League final as the goal that stands out above the rest.

Messi scored the second in Barcelona’s 2-0 victory, following an opener by Samuel Eto’o, securing the trophy and dampening what was expected to be a memorable night for Ronaldo and United.

Despite having scored hundreds of goals with his left foot and weaving through defenders with unmatched brilliance, Messi's favorite strike came from a rare header, a skill more commonly associated with his Portuguese rival.

"I had many goals that are perhaps even more beautiful and of enormous value, also because of their importance, but the header in the Champions League final against Manchester United was always my favorite," Messi told ESPN.

The goal, delivered with perfect timing and precision, was notable not only for the context of the match but for the fact that headed goals are a rarity in Messi’s scoring archive.

Turning a Goal into Art

Messi’s choice of this particular goal is not just sentimental, it’s also inspirational.

The world cup winner has partnered with renowned artist Refik Anadol as part of the "A Goal in Life" charity campaign, aiming to transform the moment into a digital artwork.

"I already knew how special Refik's works are. We were able to meet in Miami, and it will be exciting to discover how he can transform a goal, a moment in sports, into a unique piece of art like the ones he creates," Messi added.

The artwork, co-signed by both Messi and Anadol, is set to be auctioned at Christie’s, with proceeds supporting charitable causes.

It’s a fitting tribute to a career-defining moment and another example of Messi turning history into something even greater.
