Sofapaka coach Ezekiel Akwana believes his players are ready for bigger challenges abroad and should not settle for local moves to Gor Mahia or Tusker.

Following their impressive 7-1 dominant win over Tusker FC in the Kenya Premier League clash last weekend, Sofapaka head coach Ezekiel Akwana is now dreaming big.

Ezekiel Akwana now believes that his players are ripe for European clubs and should not focus on moving to Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards, or Tusker FC during the transfer window.

He urged them to set their sights on abroad moves, insisting that they have what it takes to make it there and should avoid underestimating themselves going forward.

Sofapaka handed Tusker FC the heaviest defeat in the brewers’ history, and this gives Akwana confidence that there is more to come from his players.

Ezekiel Akwana pointed out that local clubs will not give the players the exposure they need, adding that there is no huge difference if they move from Sofapaka to Gor Mahia, for instance.

Akwana added that the only difference Gor Mahia have over them is that they have a lot of money, primarily from sponsors, and fans, among other sources of income. However, he pointed out that something is cooking in terms of helping the club become financially stable.

He revealed that the quality of players is the same, and when one moves from Sofapaka to Gor Mahia, there is no major step taken in the right direction towards their career.

He encouraged players not to be in a hurry to switch clubs, insisting that they will be going for the league title next season and there are a series of things they will be addressing, to make Sofapaka a club of choice.

“I want my boys to move to Europe when they leave this club. When they join teams like Gor Mahia, I feel there’s no big difference between us and them on the pitch,” Akwana said as quoted by Pepeta.

“Technically and tactically, we are equal. The only difference is in finances. But I’m confident that next season, we will be strong financially too.

“Teams like Gor Mahia and Tusker are only ahead of us in terms of money. On the pitch, we match them in skill and tactics. Next season, as we aim for the league title, we will also be in a better financial position. On the field, we are equal, the only challenge is finances, and we’re working on it.”

Sofapaka have surprised their fans, as well as opponents, this season, and they are currently seventh on the league table with 43 points.

Akwana came in when the club was struggling, taking over from veteran Robert Matano and has raised the standards of the club by far.
