FOOTBALL In hot soup! Simba fans fry Harambee Stars defender Joash Onyango

The defender found himself on the receiving end of criticism following Friday’s disappointing performance.

Kenyan defender Joash Onyango found himself in hot soup following a below-par performance for Simba SC in a CAF Champions League group match against Raja Casablanca.

Despite a 3-1 loss in Group C’s last match, Wekundu wa Msimbazi progressed to the quarter-finals but Onyango endured a tough night against the Moroccan giants.

Casablanca scored through Hamza Khabba in the 43rd and 68th minutes - from the spot after he was brought down by Onyango – to win and finish at the top.

The only goal for the Kariakoo giants was scored by Jean Baleke in the 48th minute.

Although Simba’s coach expressed satisfaction with how his players tackled Casablanca, the fans were quick to single out Onyango, and some want him to be dropped in future games.

One argued why there is a need for Simba to look for an improved defender to replace the Kenyan top flight winner with Gor Mahia.

Another picked up instances in which the former Western Stima center-back was at fault and caused Simba to concede penalties.

A vocal fan suggested that Wekundu wa Msimbazi needs to sign young players and do away with the old guard. To him, this will help the Tanzania giants avoid embarrassing losses when playing away.

Against the grain, one fan decided to defend Onyango and said – despite many good things he has done for the club - he has been wrongly singled out.

Yahya Ngenge decided to analyse a number of players without particularly laying blame on the former KPL’s best defender of the season.

Brian Mpogole revealed he always dreads the moment Onyango receives a back pass.

Simba returns to domestic action with a game against Ihefu FC lined up for Monday, April 10, and eyes will be keen to see whether Robertinho will trust Onyango with a starting berth again.

Onyango’s direct replacement at Simba is Kennedy Juma.

Ford Musa argued that Yanga SC defender and captain Bakari Mwamnyeto is better than the Kenyan.
