Hellen Obiri will surely head to the bank smiling after her dominant win in the streets of New York City.

Newly crowned New York City Marathon champion Hellen Obiri will head to the bank smiling after her dominant win in Sunday’s race.

Obiri put up a good fight to win the race in 2:27:23 ahead of Letesenbet Gidey and defending champion Sharon Lokedi who finished second and third in respective times of 2:27:29 and 2:27:33.

With her win, Obiri will have the pride of walking away with Ksh15,060,000. Gidey, who finished second, will pocket Ksh Ksh9,036,000 while Lokedi, who finished third, will pocket Ksh6,024,000.

According to the race organisers, the fourth and fifth-place finishers will also rake in a windfall since they will be awarded Ksh3,765,000 and Ksh2,259,000 respectively.

The athletes who finish sixth, seventh, and eighth will walk away with Ksh1,506,000, Ksh1,129,500, and Ksh753,000 respectively. The ninth-place finishers will pocket Ksh376,500. An athlete who breaks the course record will walk away with an additional Ksh7,545,000.

In the men’s race, Ethiopia’s Tamirat Tola won the marathon and will be walking away with Ksh15,060,000 while the 2021 New York City Marathon champion, Albert Korir, who finished second will pocket Ksh9,036,000. Shura Kitata sealed the podium in the men’s race and he will pocket Ksh6,024,000.

Tola broke the course record in the men's race and he will also receive a bonus of Ksh7,560,000 for shattering Geoffrey Mutai’s record of 2:05:06 set back in 2011.
