Ethiopia dominated the women's 3000m steeplechase at the 2025 Absa Kip Keino Classic, completing the podium swoop on Saturday, leaving a number of Kenyan athletes in the dust.

Ethiopia’s next generation of steeplechase stars delivered a dominant performance at the 2025 Absa Kip Keino Classic, sweeping the podium in the women’s 3000m steeplechase and underlining their growing presence in a race traditionally dominated by Kenyans.

Wosane Asefa, just 18 years old, led the Ethiopian charge with a personal best of 9:30.68, pulling away in the final laps to clinch a comfortable victory in Nairobi. She was followed closely by Kena Tufa, who clocked 9:31.72 (PB), while Firehiwot Gesese completed the clean sweep in 9:32.09.

Despite a loud home crowd at Ulinzi Sports Complex, Kenya’s rising stars couldn’t keep up with the Ethiopian trio. Diana Chepkemoi, born in 2007, was the top Kenyan finisher in fourth place with a season’s best of 9:41.52. Jackline Chepkoech, a former World U20 champion, came in fifth in 9:44.48, falling short of the form that once made her a title favorite.

Further down the field, Bizunesh Getahun of Ethiopia finished sixth in 10:04.27, ahead of Kenya’s Sharon Chepkemoi (10:08.36) and Uganda’s Nancy Chepkwurui (10:22.35). Joyce Jepkogei Biwot rounded out the finishers in 10:33.70.

The race saw three DNFs: Romania’s Stella Rutto, Kenya’s Caren Chebet, and Uganda’s Loice Chekwemoi, all unable to complete the grueling race on a hot afternoon in Nairobi.

Ethiopia’s 1-2-3 finish is the latest warning shot to Kenya in the women’s steeplechase, a discipline where the East African rivals are now neck-and-neck at both junior and senior levels. Asefa’s confident run could also signal her emergence as a contender for future global titles.
