Michael Johnson has made his comments after USTAF announced that they would not be sending a team to the World Under-20 Championships later this year in Lima, Peru.

American sprint legend Michael Johnson has raised his eyebrows after the USA Track and Field governing body announced that they would not be sending a team to the World Under-20 Championships in Lima, Peru.

The event is scheduled for Tuesday, August 27 to Saturday, August 31 with Lima being the first city in Peru to host the global event. USTAF cited safety, the date of the event, and concerns around competitive readiness as the reasons why they will not be sending a team.

“After careful consideration concerning both the domestic and international athletics calendar, consultation among the internal team, advice of security consultants, and relevant government authorities, it has been decided that USA Track & Field will not be sending a Team to the 2024 World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Peru.

“We understand that this decision may be disappointing for those who were looking forward to participating, but we have the responsibility to prioritize the safety and security of all involved,” USTAF said in a press statement.

During the previous edition of the event in 2022 in Cali, Colombia where Team USA finished at the top of the medal table with 15 medals. Johnson, the American legend, has made his remarks concerning the US team pulling out of the event.

He also tied it to the United Kingdom sending very few athletes to the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, a move that raised eyebrows from fans and athletes across the globe.

“Is the track & field global champs’ model in trouble? UKA sending fewer athletes to championships, US not sending a team to U20, Commonwealth Games can’t find a host, ‘27 Pam Am Games stripped from Columbia, ‘26 Birmingham Europeans safe but after financial problems,” he said.
