American sprint icon Michael Johnson has hinted at whom he has settled for to win the Laureus Sportsman of the Year award between Noah Lyles, Erling Haaland and Lionel Messi.
American sprint icon Michael Johnson has explained how it was easy for him to settle for his Laureus World Sportsman of the Year this time.
The 25th Laureus World Sports Awards will take place in Madrid on April 22 with Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon among nominees for the Sportswoman of the Year award alongside world 100m champion Sha’Carri Richardson, reigning 200m world champion Shericka Jackson, Spanish footballer Aitana Bonmati, US skier Mikaela Shiffrin and Polish tennis star Igar Swiatek.
In the men’s category, world 100m and 200m champion Noah Lyles is up against Manchester City’s treble winner Erling Haaland, eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, who has won Laureus twice, Lionel Messi, world pole vault champion Mondo Duplantis, tennis icon Novak Djokovic and Formula One ace Max Verstappen, who claimed it in 2022.

The trio of Faith Kipyegon, Sha'Carri Richardson, and Shericka Jackson are among six nominees set to battle it out for the 2024 Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year Award.
Johnson, who has a vote at the awards, says while it has been difficult selecting his male athlete of the year previously, it was an easy choice this time.
“As a Laureus member voting for athlete of the year is always hard. This year this category was easy for me,” Johnson posted on X, in reference to the men’s awards.
Given his desire to see runners and athletics recognised, Johnson could have been swayed by Lyles’ incredible achievements in 2023 when he won three gold medals at the World Championships.
Lyles made it three straight 200m world titles while winning his maiden 100m crown before putting the icing on the cake by anchoring Team USA to the 4x100m relay gold.
It would be a bold choice given whom Lyles is up against with Haaland leading City to the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup crown while Djokovic, four-time winner at Laureus, broke the Grand Slam record while spending the most weeks as world No.1 last year.
In the women’s category, Kipyegon has a chance given her two gold medals at the 2023 World Championships as well as three world records, seeking to become the second Kenyan to claim, the prestigious award after Vivian Cheruiyot in 2012.
