“I felt like there were a lot of signs that year,” Lyles recalled.
“We suddenly started seeing each other more in one year than we had seen each other since we became best friends in 2017. And Junelle was moving to the USA that year, so I just knew it was time.”
While the signs were clear for Lyles, Bromfield needed more convincing. The idea of crossing the line between friendship and romance stirred fear in her.
“I still was not sure. I was afraid of losing our friendship because a lot of people date as friends, and that ruined their friendship. But I knew we had chemistry, so I was willing to take a risk," she admitted.

Yet not all has been smooth as the couple has faced the darker sides of public scrutiny, particularly in the aftermath of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Lyles’ dramatic photo-finish victory over Jamaican sprinter Kishane Thompson ignited fierce fan backlash.
While criticism toward athletes is hardly new, the reaction turned ugly for Bromfield, who became the target of online attacks.
“We would both say it increased the trust between each other,” they shared.
“We confided in each other even more. While everything was going on online, we had to make sure that the bad energy didn’t flow into our relationship. Because at the end of the day, we had the biggest stage to compete on, and we knew that it was important that we both remain each other’s safe space.”
From cautious beginnings to becoming one of track and field’s most beloved couples, Bromfield and Lyles’ journey is a top tier track and field love story.
