Alphonce Kigen has narrated the past setbacks that propelled him to victory at the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon.

Newly crowned Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon champion Alphonce Kigen has narrated how past failures propelled him to victory at the just concluded marathon.

Kigen clocked 2:10:18 to cross the finish line first ahead of Moses Mwangi who clocked 2:10:26 to finish second as Patrick Kipchirchir clocked 2:11:59 to complete the podium.

After the race, Kigen admitted that he was elated to have redeemed himself after a poor show at the Nairobi City Marathon back in July this year. He also finished eighth at the La Route du Louvre in France.

He also admitted that he was not aiming for victory since he was not expecting to beat the strong athletes who were also lining up for the race.

“For me, running here today (Sunday) was not about winning…it was simply about trying my best.

"I ran in the Classic this year and I did not perform well because I had not prepared well. So, today (Sunday) is a much better outcome and I am very happy about it,” Kigen explained.

With his win, he walked away with Ksh Ksh2 million while the second and third-place finishers pocketed Ksh 750,000 and Ksh 500,000 respectively.

After his win on home soil, Kigen will go back home and rest as he awaits a busy 2024 season that has several events lined up.

“For now, I am not thinking of any other marathon until next year. It is something to discuss with my coach and manager,” he said.
