The former Vienna and Sapporo Marathon winner was allegedly killed after his wife hired assailants over suspected infidelity.

Eldoret High Court heard fresh and chilling revelations in the ongoing murder trial of former Kenyan marathoner Samson Kandie, shedding new light on the events that led to his death in October 2024.

Testimonies given in court this week have linked Kandie’s wife, Rose Chepkemboi Rotich, to a deadly scheme allegedly driven by jealousy and accusations of infidelity.

Witnesses Describe Wife’s Anger and Plot to 'Discipline' Kandie Over Suspected Affair

Kandie, 53, was found unconscious at his Elgon View residence on October 2, 2024, with both his hands and legs tied with rope — a discovery that immediately suggested possible foul play.

"Though I had received Sh10,000 as a deposit, I realised that the assignment was too hard for me and that is why I declined to continue with the mission to discipline the deceased as requested by madam," testified Joshua Nyanchae, a hawker based in Eldoret who turned state witness as per The Easleigh Voice.

He told the court that Chepkemboi approached him via one of her former house helps, offering Sh200,000 to orchestrate an attack on Kandie.

Four of the 17 scheduled witnesses took the stand on Tuesday before Eldoret High Court Justice Reuben Nyakundi, providing a web of testimonies that point toward a calculated plan allegedly initiated by Chepkemboi.

The plan, intended to intimidate or punish Kandie over suspicions of an extra-marital affair, allegedly spiraled into violence that resulted in his death.

According to Nyanchae, Chepkemboi believed Kandie was involved with a woman named Millicent.

Although he initially accepted a Sh10,000 advance, he opted out, fearing the task was beyond what he had anticipated.

Court Hears How Threatening Messages and Bribery Led to Former Athlete’s Death

Another witness, Felix Kodek, corroborated this account and said Chepkemboi approached him and a friend at the Belasco Hotel in Eldoret with a similar proposal.

"We met with madam at the Belasco hotel, where she bought us alcohol as we discussed how to execute the mission. During our meeting, she gave us Sh9,000, and our then team leader gave me Sh2,000, and later on I opted out of the mission," Kodek told the court.

Chepkemboi's former househelp, Sheila Malakwen, further revealed the depth of her employer’s anger over the alleged affair.

"The accused... used to complain about her husband's extra-marital affair with a commercial sex worker that she had identified," Malakwen said.

She added that one of the co-accused used her phone to send threatening text messages to Kandie, pretending to be Millicent’s boyfriend.

"One of the accused knew madam through me and... borrowed my phone to text the deceased with threatening messages," she said.

Kandie had apparently confided in his former farmhand, Alex Wanjala, about the threatening texts he received, which deeply unsettled him.

"I am looking for your head. I warn you to leave my sister Rose alone and deal with your prostitute known as Millicent," Wanjala quoted one of the messages shown to him by Kandie.

Chepkemboi, along with Jamlick Morogit and Vincent Ngososei Kiprono, was arrested and charged with Kandie’s murder.

The trial continues as more witnesses are expected to testify in the coming days, with the court aiming to determine the full extent of the alleged conspiracy that ended the life of the former athlete.
