Kenya Sevens are confident of making it back-to-back titles at the 2024 Challenger Series having recovered well to make it to the cup semi-final in Uruguay.

Kenya Sevens captain Vincent Onyala is confident of winning the 2024 Challenger Series second leg in Uruguay after making it to the semi-finals on Sunday morning.

Shujaa recovered well from their earlier setback to storm into the cup quarters where they edged neighbours Uganda 7-5 in Montevideo through a penalty try to set up a semi-final meeting with Hong Kong on Sunday night.

Following the win, Onyala is confident of making it to a second straight final and retaining their title after claiming the opening leg in Dubai in January.

“We treat it like every final, the boys have worked and we thank God for the result at the end of the day we emerged victorious,” Onyala told World Rugby.

“Playing East Africans is normally a fight, back at home we have something called Elgon (Cup) where we normally fight between the two countries.

“We plead with our fans to grow with us, the team is growing bit by bit and the results are positive. Gratitude to them for keeping the game alive and making sure the game grows.

“Focus now is recovery as we await the final day in the semis, hopefully, we go to the final and once we get there we do what we do.”

Shujaa had found themselves in a difficult position on the opening day when they beat Portugal 19-12 before succumbing to a 17-0 loss to Georgia and faced a must-win tie against Tonga to make it to the Cup quarters.

They fought hard to secure a 17-14 win to finish second in Group A and earn a place in the quarters against Group C leaders Uganda.

With a place in the semi-final, Kenya have kept alive their hopes of topping the standings again, having come to Montevideo with the maximum 20 points earned from five wins and one defeat in Dubai.

They will hope to maintain their resurgence as the top four teams in the standings at the end of the third round in May will take their place alongside the bottom four teams from the HSBC SVNS in the promotion-relegation tournament at the Grand Final in Madrid.
