Brian Wahinya has explained why helping Kenya Simbas qualify for the 2027 Rugby World Cup for the first time in the country's history would be game changing for the sport in the country.

Kenya 15s fly half Brian Wahinya has explained what helping the Simbas make history by qualifying for the 2027 Rugby World Cup would mean for the country, as the side continues its preparations for the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup in South Africa.

Wahinya was part of the 33-man squad that travelled to South Africa to take part in a month-long tournament build-up camp, before they travel to Uganda to take part in the tournament, which they aim to win in order to boost their chances of qualifying for the competition in Brisbane, Australia in 2027.

Speaking to Pulse Sports, Wahinya, who plies his trade for KCB, took time to break down their 54-24 friendly win over UAE in Nairobi a couple of weeks ago, as well as their preparations in South Africa.

“We spent a lot of time on their territory, but there were moments we were losing possession,” Wahinya said when explaining why they were trailing 14-0 in the first thirty minutes of the match.

“We were making basic mistakes and that is what was letting us down—losing balls and more—so we just had to fix little things like those,” Wahinya said.

Wahinya was part of the preliminary squad for the 2023 World Cup qualifying campaign but missed out on making the final cut for the repechage tournament in Dubai, where Kenya missed the chance to make history.

Now, with three years of experience under his belt, Wahinya is determined to help Kenya make history.

Asked whether the country has a chance of lifting this year’s Rugby Africa Cup, Wahinya was confident.

“100 percent. I believe in everyone selected. It will be hard for the coaches to make the final squad. That camp is helping us and putting us in the right direction.”

Simbas have so far taken part in two build-up matches. They drew 17-17 with the SWC Eagles, before losing 42-24 to South Africa’s Junior Boks. They will be taking part in two more friendlies before travelling to Uganda.

The winners will secure a direct ticket to the World Cup. Explaining what making history would mean, Wahinya said:

“This is a life-changing opportunity not just for the players, but for rugby as a whole in Kenya. I am sure it will change the scope, including for our children and our children’s children.

“The tournament will help improve investment into the sport in the country. The moment 15s prosper, the whole rugby union will prosper itself. We are keeping our fingers crossed, and I am sure with the squad we have, we have the potential to make history.”

A Message to the Fans

“I thank the fans. They motivate us all the way. They need to keep supporting me and the team, and I am sure we will make Kenya proud.”
