The Kenya Simbas have unveiled a 28-man squad brimming with promise ahead of the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup set for July 8–19 in Kampala, Uganda.

This tournament not only pits Africa's top rugby nations against each other but also serves as a direct qualification route to the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.

With 13 players selected from Kabras Sugar RFC, the Kenya Cup champions and sevens circuit leaders, the club’s influence on the national team is indisputable.

The inclusion of stalwarts like Ephraim Oduor, Edward Mwaura, and Patrick Sabatia, the latter named Player of the Final, speaks volumes about Kabras's recent form and dominance in the forward pack.

Sabatia, in particular, has become an indispensable figure with his tireless work rate and leadership in the back row.

In the backs, Walter Okoth, Barry Young, and prolific winger Griffin Chao, who racked up 17 tries this season, offer attacking firepower and tactical awareness.

Their synergy, developed during a successful domestic campaign, is expected to transfer smoothly to the international stage.

Kenya Cup runners-up Menengai Oilers have also contributed significantly, with six players making the cut.

Ibrahim Ayoo brings strength to the second row, while Timothy Omela and John Okoth add versatility and speed to the backline.

Okoth’s return is particularly noteworthy, having missed much of the HSBC Sevens Series with Shujaa due to injury. Vincent Mwikhali, one of the season's standout performers has also earned a deserved call-up.

KCB RFC, despite a below-par 15s season, sees five of its players included, led by experienced scrum-half Brian Wahinya and promising forward Wilhite Mususi.

However, Elvis Olukusi’s omission, despite being part of the provisional training squad, hints at recent inconsistency in form.

From outside the traditional powerhouses, Obat Kuke of Blak Blad is the only inclusion, underscoring the stiff competition and the difficulty of breaking into the squad from mid-table clubs. His selection is a nod to his tenacity and form throughout the season.

Foreign-Based and Sevens Stars Add Edge and Experience

Three foreign-based players David Bunduki of NovaVit Griffons, Thomas Okeyo, and Bethuel Anami of MLSGP 78 have been called upon to lend international experience.

Their ability to adapt to different playing styles is expected to be vital, particularly in knockout stages where impact off the bench can turn the tide.

From the Sevens circuit, the return of Samuel Asati, Brian Tanga, and Jone Kubu who is expected to rejoin from South Africa will inject speed, creativity, and breakdown expertise.

Their versatility and tempo will be essential, especially against fast-paced opponents like Uganda and Namibia.

Notably missing from the squad are Samson Onsomu, despite good domestic form, and Beldad Ogeta, the inspirational Menengai Oilers captain who led his side to four finals.

The 2025 Rugby Africa Cup features a high-stakes bracket, with Kenya drawn against hosts Uganda Rugby Cranes in what promises to be a thrilling East African derby.

Semifinals are scheduled for July 13, with the final set for July 19. Only the tournament winner will book an automatic ticket to Australia 2027, raising the stakes for every fixture.
