The future of Kenyan rugby looks promising after KRU agreed a multi-million partnership deal to help revamp youth and grassroots level.

The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has launched a transformative grassroots initiative dubbed Pass It Back, aimed at empowering Kenyan youth through sport.

Backed by a multi-million shilling sponsorship from Menzies Aviation, the two-year partnership—valued at over USD 90,000 (approximately Ksh11.6 million)—marks a major milestone in KRU’s development blueprint.

The initiative, developed in collaboration with ChildFund Rugby and Menzies Aviation, places Kenya alongside other nations using rugby as a vehicle for social empowerment and community development.

Targeting youth aged 11 to 16, the programme will adopt World Rugby’s T1 non-contact format, offering a safe and inclusive environment for participants to learn both rugby fundamentals and vital life skills.

The first rollout phase, titled "Playing for Equality", will emphasize gender balance, leadership, and social inclusion—with over 50% of the 250+ expected participants being girls.

KRU CEO Thomas Odundo hailed the partnership as a dual-impact venture: "Investing in the next generation is how we build a lasting legacy and position rugby as a platform for personal and community growth.

Our partnership with ChildFund Rugby is also key to improving internal systems and ensuring long-term sustainability."

In addition to engaging youth, the programme will train coaches aged 16 to 25, who will deliver 90-minute sessions blending sport with lessons in resilience, confidence, and leadership.

KRU Chairperson Harriet Okach echoed the sentiment: “It offers knowledge, instils values, and imparts life-changing skills. We thank our partners and call on all stakeholders to embrace rugby as a tool for transforming lives.”

Mohammed Tambi, General Manager of Menzies Aviation Kenya, emphasized that the partnership transcends financial investment: “Our investment in Pass It Back is about more than just money. This is about empowering youth and leaving a meaningful, lasting impact on future generations.”

The launch also coincides with the 10th anniversary of the global Pass It Back programme, reaffirming its track record in using rugby to drive positive social change.
