Sacked Inter Miami coach lands Canadian job

Phil Neville, a former defender for Manchester United, has accepted to join the coaching staff for the Canadian national team.

On June 1, Neville was fired from his position as head coach of Inter Miami, where the team ended last in the MLS standings.

Neville joined Devid Beckham’s team Inter Miami in 2021 but the team was in shambles as they struggled to escape relegation this season.

However, he has gotten a new role in the Canadian national team as they prepare for the next World Cup.

New opportunity for Neville

Canada head coach John Herdman has appointed a new set of coaching staff as he looks to sharpen up his team for the next tournament.

According to reports for BBC, Ex-Coventry defender Richard Shaw has also joined the coaching team including Phil Neville.

In an interview, Herdman said, "Phil and Richard bring with them winning experiences at the highest levels.

John Herdman has said that he needs backup coaching staff with winning experience at the top level which is why he appointed them.

Phil Neville’s career

Neville transitioned into coaching after finishing his playing career with Everton in 2013 and worked as an assistant with Manchester United and Valencia before accepting the position of head coach of the England Women's National team, which he went on to win the SheBelieves Cup in 2019 and place fourth at the 2019 World Cup.

Inter Miami reached out to him in 2021 and coached them till 2023 before he was let go by the club after poor performance.

The Canada coaching staff for the forthcoming Concacaf Nations League championships in Las Vegas will include Neville and Shaw, who have previously held coaching positions at Coventry and Millwall.

On June 15 at MetLife Stadium, Canada plays against Panama; if they win, they'll play the winner of the USA vs. Mexico matchup for the nation's first championship since 2000.
