The left-footed winger has landed a major deal in America that has the potential of shaping his football and academic career in a great way.

While other outstanding performers for Kenya at the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations have been said to be on the radar of teams abroad, it is one of them who played a few minutes that has gone first.

Rising Stars players put in a great display as Kenya bowed out of the group stages following two losses and a draw but a number of them left a lasting impression with some attracting the eyes of scouts.

Winger Javan Omondi has become the first from the Class of 2025 to secure a move abroad after landing a potential life-changing full athletic and academic scholarship to the United States.

Omondi is set to join North Carolina-based Gardner-Webb University and will now compete in the NCAA Division 1 League, the highest division of intercollegiate athletics sanctioned by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the United States.

The Ulinzi Stars forward’s departure to the US was made public by Dream Sports, a development and scouting organisation that helps budding footballers secure moves abroad.

“In collaboration with Kenyan scout Meshack Mutende and coach Cedric Muteshi, we are proud to announce the first official transfer of a player from the Kenyan U20 national team under Dream Sports,” the organization said via a statement.

“Congratulations to Javan Omondi, who will continue his academic and athletic career at Gardner-Webb University, NCAA Division 1 league, with a full scholarship to the United States.”

Omondi featured in two matches for Rising Stars at the U20 AFCON in Egypt, getting 29 minutes in their opening match against Morocco, which they lost 3-2, before playing 46 minutes in the 3-1 loss to Tunisia.

He had, however, already shown his qualities even before heading to the tournament, with his great pace and ability to beat defenders in one-on-one situations a joy to watch.

“I express profound gratitude to the Divine for orchestrating my successful transfer to Gardner-Webb University. I am poised to embark on this journey next month. Wishing myself the utmost success and felicity,” a delighted Omondi said via a social media post.

The left-footed winger will now hope to use the opportunity to shape his football career.
