Gor Mahia are working on ways to ensure there are no issues at Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay during the Mashemeji Derby next month.

Gor Mahia are keen to avoid pitfalls that could sour the Mashemeji Derby after deciding to play the high stakes fixture outside Nairobi.

The Mashemeji Derby will for the first time be staged away from the capital after Gor Mahia failed to secure a suitable venue in Nairobi, having settled on Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay for the June 2 clash against arch rivals AFC Leopards.

This is the biggest fixture on the FKF Premier League calendar given it involves the two teams with the biggest following in the country and as such, security arrangements have to be spot on.

Knowing the stadium in Homa Bay will present its own challenges, K’Ogalo are preparing for how to ensure there are no security breaches that could prove catastrophic.

“There will be a team that will visit the place and see how we can subdivide the terraces and how many people can be accommodated at the VIP. They will also look at the seating arrangement and stadium capacity,” Gor Mahia treasurer Gerphas Okuku told Pulse Sports.

“This is information we have sought from the county. Once we get that, then there will be proper planning on security and the sitting arrangement.”

Okuku says rivals AFC Leopards are okay with playing the match in Homa Bay as they understand the club’s dilemma and are willing to help avoid a chaotic situation as witnessed at Gusii Stadium when over 70 fans sustained injuries following clashes between Shabana and Gor Mahia supporters on May 4.

“AFC Leopards have no issue with going to Homa Bay. The communication has reached their chairman and he has no problem. We should not fight about this, it is give and take,” Okuku further said.

“It would be good if we have a stadium of like 20,000 capacity. I hope the [Homa Bay] stadium gets closer to that so that we can have a game where people do not have to fight for places to sit like we witnessed at Gusii Stadium.”

Gor Mahia face a must-win situation against Leopards as they have a slim chance of retaining their FKF Premier League title given Kenya Police need one win from their remaining two games to be crowned.
