Pyramids FC snatched a late equaliser against Sundowns in a tightly contested CAF Champions League final first leg encounter.

Egyptian heavyweights Pyramids FC grabbed a crucial late equaliser to secure a 1-1 draw against Mamelodi Sundowns in the first leg of the CAF Champions League final on Saturday evening.

Sundowns made a couple of tweaks to their starting eleven following their recent win over Magesi FC, with Arthur Sales being rewarded for his recent form by partnering Iqraam Rayners up front. In defence, Grant Kekana slotted in for Khoza in one of the few changes by coach Miguel Cardoso.

The Brazilians started brightly dictating the tempo and testing the visitors early on. Rayners came close to opening the scoring with a powerful effort from range, only to be denied by a smart save from the Pyramids goalkeeper.

Despite the early pressure from the South African side, it was the Egyptians who should have gone ahead in the 19th minute. Fiston Mayele found space on the left and fired a low drive inches wide of Ronwen Williams’ post. Moments later, Mayele squandered another opportunity after finding himself in a promising position once more.

Frustrated by the midfield imbalance, Cardoso made an early tactical adjustment in the 39th minute, replacing Tashreeq Matthews with Jayden Adams to bring more control to the centre of the pitch. The substitution provided a bit more composure, but Sundowns continued to lack cutting edge in the final third, with Lucas Costa Ribeiro largely marked out of the game.

However, Ribeiro eventually made his presence felt after the break. In the 54th minute, he capitalised on a loose ball inside the area and smashed it into the top corner, giving Sundowns a deserved lead.

Pyramids, desperate not to leave Pretoria empty-handed, pushed forward in search of an equaliser but struggled to break down a resolute Sundowns defence. Williams remained largely untested as the Brazilians managed the game well.

With just over ten minutes remaining, Cardoso introduced Peter Shalulile for Sales to exploit the spaces left by the Egyptians as they chased the game. The plan nearly worked, but Sundowns were unable to land the killer blow.

Their failure to close out the game came back to haunt them in added time, when Walid El Karti rose highest at the back post to head home a dramatic equaliser, ensuring the tie remains finely poised ahead of the second leg.
