Linton Maina has been a man on demand after his productive campaign that has seen him score five goals and register 15 assists in all competitions for Koln this season.

Kenya-eligible winger Linton Maina has committed his future to FC Köln after playing a pivotal role in their promotion back to the Bundesliga — turning down interest from several German top-flight clubs in the process.

Maina, who was instrumental in Köln's dominant 2. Bundesliga campaign, confirmed he had already extended his contract weeks ago, ending months of speculation about a potential free transfer.

Speaking after Köln’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Kaiserslautern that sealed their return to the Bundesliga, the 24-year-old addressed thousands of jubilant supporters at the RheinEnergieStadion with a heartfelt message:

"The whole city simply deserves this," he declared.

"Five or six weeks ago, I signed with a Bundesliga club — one that can finally call itself a Bundesliga club again."

Maina’s statement not only confirmed his commitment to Köln but also subtly referenced the club’s regained top-tier status.

Despite being sidelined with an ankle injury, Maina's contributions this season have been significant. He scored five goals and provided 12 assists in 29 appearances across all competitions, putting him on the radar of Bundesliga clubs such as Borussia Mönchengladbach, Mainz 05, and Werder Bremen.

Even Hamburg, Köln’s closest promotion rivals, reportedly maintained interest.

Yet, rather than jump ship to one of Germany’s bigger names, the former Germany U20 international chose to remain with the club that handed him a revival after inconsistent stints with Hannover 96 and in his earlier Bundesliga spells.

Having made 86 Bundesliga appearances for Hannover and Köln prior to this season, Maina had often been perceived as lacking the sharpness to consistently perform at the highest level.

However, his 2023/24 form appears to have shifted that narrative. No longer just seen as a low-risk free agent, Maina is now valued for his creativity, consistency, and leadership on the pitch — all qualities he hopes to carry into Köln’s return to the Bundesliga.

His decision to stay could also be seen as a major win for Harambee Stars fans, who continue to monitor the player’s trajectory in hopes of a potential national team switch under Benni McCarthy in the future.

For now, Maina is focused on helping Köln re-establish themselves in the Bundesliga — not just as participants, but as a team that belongs.
