Nzoia Sugar are rock-bottom of the league after 22 league games, a stark contrast to their form from last season, when they challenged for the title under Salim Babu.

Nzoia Sugar FC coach Steve Biko has blamed his side’s struggles this season on the inexperienced nature of a majority of his squad following their 2-0 loss to AFC Leopards on Sunday.

Nzoia put in a spirited fight but could not hang on, as goals by Arthur Gitego and Hassan Beja sank them 2-0 to leave them languishing rock-bottom of the league on 16 points.

Biko believes that, given most of his players are top-flight debutants, they have struggled to match up to the standards of last season’s squad, which was largely decimated after pulling off a surprise title challenge.

“Coming into the match, we were thinking of ways in which we would be compact without the ball and I think for 75 minutes, we did well,” Biko said.

“With that one chance, we slipped in the defence and that is actually even how they got their second goal.

“My players are inexperienced and I think it cost us against AFC Leopards. They were getting chances to score, but you could see that their lack of experience counted against them in key moments in the attacking third.”

In January, Biko added some experienced players to the side, such as former Gor Mahia captain Harun Shakava on loan from Kenya Police and Dan Musamali, to help some of the leaders at the side such as Harun ‘Mwalimu’ Thomas rub their experience on to the youngsters.

Biko believes these players will help the side gain positive results moving forward

“They have added experience to the mix, and the young boys are learning from them, so they give them motivation and enable them to keep pushing forward.”
