"We worked together at FC Twente and PSV. At both clubs, I was the head coach, and Erik was my assistant. But in 2022, I made the choice not to go," Rutten explained to Sportnieuws.nl.
The now 62-year-old from Gelderland opted for a role as assistant manager to Ruud van Nistelrooy at PSV.
"I have a family and grandchildren, and I want to see them occasionally. I didn't want to get caught up in the rollercoaster of such a big English club. And in hindsight, it's very good that I didn't, due to my health. I don't want to say anything more about it, but I'm glad I didn't do it," Rutten continued.
Nowadays, he's one of the technical advisors at NEC, close to his birthplace of Alverna. A decision tha seems to have paid off with Ten Hag's turbulent tenure at Manchester United.

Rulani Mokwena Addresses Links With Return to South Africa and Egyptian Giants
Rulani Mokwena has hinted at a possible return to a major South African club while remaining tight lipped on one of his former clubs and Egyptian giants.
"I quite like life 'without' football, you know. I'm still active as an advisor, but that's more behind the scenes. So I'm no longer directly active in the field."
However, Rutten is keeping his options open, as he's still eager to be involved if the new NEC manager, Dick Schreuder, is interested.
"They can always consult me, which is great. I also really appreciate that people still hold me in high regard. I respect that enormously. And it's especially nice that the club has experienced such positive growth," concluded the former manager.
