Nyayo Stadium will be closed for renovations immediately after this weekend's KipKeino classic and Mashemeji derby.

The Nyayo National Stadium has been selected as the official host venue for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), set to take place in Kenya and Uganda this coming September.

The decision comes despite ongoing renovations at the stadium, which will also host the 2024 Kip Keino Classic.

Following the conclusion of the Kip Keino Classic on April 22, the stadium will undergo accelerated renovation works to ensure it is ready in time for the CHAN competition.

The Ministry of Sports released a statement confirming the timeline for the renovations.

“The contractor identified to upgrade Nyayo National Stadium for CHAN 24’ and as a supporting facility for AFCON ‘27 will commence accelerated works immediately after the conclusion of the Kip Keino classic on April 22, 2024,” the statement read.

With just five months until the CHAN tournament kicks off, the pressure is on to complete the renovations promptly.

Despite the tight schedule, the government is committed to ensuring the stadium meets the required standards for the competition.

In addition to the CHAN preparations, questions remain about the venue for Kenya's 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Ivory Coast and Burundi this June.

The government has confirmed ongoing consultations with CAF and FIFA to determine the appropriate venue for these crucial matches.

The government has emphasized the long-term benefits of upgrading sports infrastructure in Kenya, highlighting the potential economic boost from hosting major international events.

“We assure all sports enthusiasts and the people of Kenya that this transformative trajectory will be sustained, growing our country’s creative and sporting industries and feeding our sports tourism agenda,” the statement concluded.

As preparations continue for the upcoming tournaments, Kenya looks forward to showcasing its improved sports facilities on the international stage, aiming to bolster its reputation as a premier destination for sporting events in Africa.
