Exeter City head coach Gary Caldwell has shed light on his decision to substitute Harambee Stars defender Vincent Harper just 19 minutes after bringing him on during their 4-2 victory over Port Vale on Saturday.
Harper, who earned his maiden call-up to the Harambee Stars squad for a friendly against Russia last September, was replaced in the 84th minute, having entered the field in the 65th minute. This marked the second consecutive weekend that Harper was substituted shortly after coming on as a substitute, raising questions among fans and pundits alike.
Caldwell clarified that the decision was made as a precautionary measure due to the demanding nature of the season and the fitness issues faced by many players.
“It has been a long and hard season. The players have given everything, and like I said a few weeks ago, everyone is in different stages in terms of playing a lot of games and tiring," Caldwell explained.
“We still have enough in the squad that I can be competitive with, but we need to recover and get everyone ready for another big game.”
Following the match against Stevenage, Harper acknowledged that a recent challenge during a game against Lincoln had affected his progression and contributed to his early substitution.
