CHAN 2024 will showcase East Africa’s top stadiums, with a stunning lineup of upgraded, beautiful, and high-capacity venues across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Mildred Wanyama, wife to former AFC Leopards player Noah Wanyama, raised one of the most successful sports families in Kenya.

A firm believer in discipline and education, she instilled values in her children that not only shaped their character but also fueled their achievements on the global stage.

Four of her sons, McDonald Mariga, Victor Wanyama, Thomas, and Sylvester played professional football, while her daughter Mercy Wanyama has carried the family name into international basketball arenas.

Born into a sports-loving family and married to a footballer, Mildred naturally gravitated towards nurturing a strong sporting culture within her household.

Her husband Noah was a midfield stalwart for AFC Leopards, and it was from him that the Wanyama children drew early inspiration to pursue careers in professional sports.

But it was Mildred’s role as a disciplinarian and pillar of support that molded the family into what it became.

This emphasis on structure and responsibility ensured that her children remained focused on their goals, a trait that played a critical role in their meteoric rise.

Mildred didn’t just support from the sidelines. She once ventured into sports administration herself, having served as the president of the Kenya Netball Federation.

Her leadership, both at home and within the sports management sphere, positioned her as a trailblazer in the realm of women and sports in Kenya.

Among her children, Mariga carved his name into the history books by becoming the first Kenyan to play in a UEFA Champions League final, representing Italian giants Inter Milan.

His younger brother Victor Wanyama followed closely in his footsteps, enjoying a successful European career with clubs like Celtic, Southampton, and Tottenham Hotspur before taking his talents to Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States.

Both have played for the Kenyan national football team with Wanyama even serving as captain for the Harambee Stars.

Mercy Wanyama, Mildred’s daughter, has proudly flown the Kenyan flag in basketball, representing both club and country internationally.

Meanwhile, Thomas and Sylvester Wanyama also had careers in professional football, ensuring that the Wanyama name became synonymous with sporting excellence in Kenya.

As tributes continue to pour in, Mildred Wanyama’s legacy will be remembered not just in the success of her children, but in the inspiration she provided for many Kenyan families, showing what is possible when discipline, passion, and support intersect in the home.
