Kenyan football legends MacDonald Mariga and Victor Wanyama are mourning the loss of their mother, Mildred Wanyama, who passed away after a brief illness.

Kenya’s renowned footballing family the Wanyama's of football legends McDonald Mariga and Victor Wanyama is grieving following the passing of their beloved matriarch, Mildred Wanyama.

The sad news was confirmed by the family on Saturday morning, revealing that she succumbed to an illness.

Mariga, a former Kenyan national football team midfielder and current FKF Vice President, shared the family’s sorrow in a heartfelt statement.

"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, who left us peacefully today morning. We are currently making arrangements and will share more details soon," shared Mariga.

A Mother Behind Two Kenyan Football Legends

Mildred Wanyama was the proud mother of two of Kenya’s most celebrated footballers in Mariga and Wanyama. Her unwavering support and influence played a major role in their rise to international football stardom.

Mariga etched his name in the history books as the first East African to win the UEFA Champions League, accomplishing the feat with Italian giants Inter Milan under Jose Mourinho. He also had notable stints with Serie A clubs Parma and Real Sociedad.

Wanyama, the younger of the two, served as the captain of the Harambee Stars and was a fan favorite at Tottenham Hotspur, Southampton, and Celtic FC. His commanding presence in midfield made him one of Kenya’s most successful football exports.

Nation Joins in Mourning an Iconic Figure

Though not a public figure in sports, Mildred Wanyama was seen by many as the glue that held together one of Kenya's most iconic football families.

Her contribution, through the nurturing of talent and values that propelled her sons to greatness, has not gone unnoticed.

Tributes have begun pouring in from across the Kenyan football landscape and beyond, with fellow players, officials, and fans offering condolences and remembering the role she played in shaping a generation of football excellence.

Her body has since been moved to Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi for preservation as the nation stands in solidarity with the Wanyama family during this difficult time.
