McDonald Mariga has revealed why the Wanyama Football Academy, which he co-owns with his brother Victor, has yet to be opened two years since announcing to the public it was close to completion.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Vice President McDonald Mariga has provided details on when the upcoming Wanyama Foundation Academy, which is based in Nambale, Busia,  will be completed.

Having been exposed to state-of-the-art facilities on top of amassing wealth by going abroad, both Mariga and his brother Victor formed the Wanyama Foundation in 2018 with the aim of helping to give back to the Kenyan community in order to help youths realize their sporting dreams and ambitions.

As previously reported by Pulse Sports in 2023 , the foundation has been creating an ambitious project, the Wanyama Academy in Busia. The project is currently being constructed on a 22-acre piece of land.

It has an administration block, which will house the academy's reception area and administrators’ offices. Also included in the plan are state of the art pitches, to be used for training and official league matches.

The project also intends to have teachers’ quarters, which shall house the tutors, coaches, and players’ handlers. Footballers will also reside in designated dormitories at the expansive complex.

Only Pitch-Leveling Works Remaining

Speaking to the media last Saturday, Mariga explained why the project has yet to be completed since the announcement over its near-completion was made two years ago.

“We are making fine progress, but the ground has been challenging to level up because it was a bit sloppy,” Mariga said.

“ We were told we need to gradually level it because it might gain technical issues later if we rush completing it. You cannot complete it in just three weeks.

“We want to make something professional that will help the community. “

Mariga however insists the only work remaining is the completion of the football pitch, which will need time to fully grade.

“ However, classes and offices are finished, so it is all about making sure the pitch is good enough.”“It was raining over there which hampered the progress of completion as well.”

Mariga: Wanyama Foundation Academy WIll Be Game Changing

This project aims not only at creating  job opportunities for youth in Busia but  also give chances to the youth in the region to showcase their talents at the state-of-the-art facility.

“We have played in Europe and have seen first hand the benefits of academies. We have acquired the knowledge necessary to nurture players and we will have professional coaches.

“We have academies from abroad who want to help us run programmes which will make it easier for us to be able to run the academy,” Mariga said in 2023.

Mariga envisions that the players will receive formal education at the facility while pursuing their professional football careers. The purpose is to make students have a backup plan in case football does not work for them

Wanyama's foundation is currently sponsoring needy students through scholarships. The students are also occasionally treated to extracurricular activities, such as visits to game parks.
