The football legend urged Manchester United to give Antony another chance following his impressive loan spell at Real Betis, despite doubts over the winger's return.

Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar has urged Ruben Amorim to give Antony another chance at Old Trafford.

Antony was signed for £ 86 million from Ajax in 2022, during Erik Ten Hag’s era, but he struggled to live up to the billing. In 96 games, Antony only managed 12 goals and five assists.

His personal life was not free from controversy as allegations of domestic abuse were made against Antony by three women in September 2023, and at the time, he admitted to having considered retirement while at Manchester United.

His contract with the Red Devils will end in 2027, but he failed to impress under Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim and was sent out on loan in January to Real Betis.

The Brazilian made a mark at the club, becoming one of their best players, managing to score 14 times in 26 games. He also earned a recall to the Brazil national team.

Van der Sar has urged Ruben Amorim to consider Antony since he has proven himself during his time on loan at Real Betis.

“They're on the right track by signing a more experienced striker, maybe with another one on the way,” he told The Sun.

“The two players they signed in the winter break were good, so they should be fine if they give faith to the manager.

“Maybe Alejandro Garnacho's going to go, I would say bring Antony back, but I'm not sure if that's realistic.”

However, Antony’s return to Manchester United is highly unlikely since he admitted to having endured one of the toughest times at Old Trafford.

In a past interview, as reported by the Daily Mail, Antony pointed out that he had self-doubt, revealing that he experienced some of his painful moments.

“I started to doubt, even in myself. But, my family always told me to stay calm, because the process is painful and people must accept it,” Antony said.

“Today, I understand it better after everything I went through. I am grateful for that experience. I was hitting rock bottom without any hope, despite continuing to do my part for the club.”

Antony is widely expected to leave the club this summer, after joining for £86 million during Erik ten Hag's first transfer window, but has yet to justify the hefty fee.
