Manchester United face a transfer setback as a top European club backs out of a potential deal for a key player.

Manchester United have been dealt a significant transfer setback as Bayer Leverkusen have reportedly pulled out of the race to sign one of their most sought-after young stars.

The £70 million-rated winger, once seen as central to United’s future, is now facing an uncertain path out of Old Trafford.

The Argentine forward has been on the fringes of the squad since being dropped for last month’s Europa League final loss to Tottenham.

Alejandro Garnacho's omission sparked controversy, particularly after his public criticism of the club’s performance this season.

A reunion with former United boss Erik ten Hag at Bayer Leverkusen had seemed a realistic escape route.

CHAN 2024 will showcase East Africa’s top stadiums, with a stunning lineup of upgraded, beautiful, and high-capacity venues across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

The German champions were monitoring the situation closely, but concerns over the overall financial package have put an end to their interest, according to Sky Germany.

“Package of transfer fee and wages mean that any deal is unlikely,” the outlet reported, stating that Leverkusen are now evaluating alternative options in the transfer market.

Public fallout heightens pressure at United

The winger's frustration boiled over following the Europa League final. He posted a scathing remark on social media labelling the season as “s***,” while his brother, who also acts as his agent, accused manager Ruben Amorim of having “thrown [him] under the bus.”

Mail Sport later revealed that Amorim addressed the situation head-on, reportedly telling the winger to “find a new club” during a team meeting at Carrington. The tense exchange is believed to have further fractured the relationship between player and manager.

Despite the turmoil, the 20-year-old remains one of United’s most valuable assets. He has three years left on his current contract, which gives the club leverage in the market—but also complicates any potential move due to the hefty price tag.

United’s transfer activity adds urgency to sales

Ruben Amorim is pushing for a squad overhaul this summer, with key attacking players including Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Jadon Sancho also reportedly up for sale.

United have already made a splash with the £62.5 million signing of Matheus Cunha and are in active pursuit of Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo and Sporting’s Viktor Gyokeres.

Both Mbeumo and Gyokeres could command fees in excess of £60 million, putting further emphasis on the need to generate funds through outgoings.

Garnacho was seen as a likely candidate to bring in significant revenue, but Leverkusen’s withdrawal has complicated that strategy.

Unless another Champions League-calibre club steps in with a suitable offer, United may be forced to lower their demands—or risk a prolonged saga with a disillusioned player and growing unrest in the squad.
