The dependable defender leaves the club after nine years.

In a surprise to the football fraternity, Ulinzi Stars defender Omar Mbongi has decided to retire from professional football.

The news of the defender's retirement came as a shock as his club was playing Nairobi City Stars in a match that they won 2-0.

In his final game for the club, Mbongi was handed the armband in the clash against City Stars as he called time on his career following the end of the first leg of the season.

Mbongi joined Ulinzi Stars nine years ago, having came through the youth ranks of the four-time Football Kenya Federation Premier League (fFKFPL) champions.

"My journey through football has come to an end. I will miss the club and fans, and as much as I love them, it is time to say goodbye to the playing unit as a Ulinzi Stars player.

I promise to be part of the team and to the fans; I love you all. I appreciate my teammates and management and the Kenya Defence Forces fraternity. I appreciate your time and support while I was at the club.

I pray for you, and may you continue with the good work in building talents. The time has now come for me to give the young generation a chance to showcase their capabilities and the talent gifted by the Almighty.

Thank you all till we meet again. Much love," Mbongi posted.

The defender started his football journey in December 2013 at Kenya Navy FC before joining Ulinzi Stars in 2014.

He made himself one of the regular players at the military outfit and was made several appearances for Harambee Stars.
