Arsenal’s win over Real Madrid earned the Premier League a fifth Champions League spot but there is a possibility of having seven English clubs in the competition next season.

Arsenal’s stunning 3-0 win over Real Madrid earned the Premier League an extra Champions League spot but it could be up to seven English clubs in the competition next season.

The Gunners thrashed the European champions with a pair of freekick goals from Declan Rice and Mikel Merino’s late strike securing a memorable first leg win for Mike Arteta’s side in the quarter-final first leg, which gives them a huge advantage heading into the second leg at Santiago Bernabeu.

With that, Arsenal have earned the Premier League a fifth Champions League place, meaning the club that finishes in fifth position this season will play in the prestigious tournament.

This is due to the performances of Premier League clubs in all of UEFA’s competitions this season as England is now guaranteed a top-two spot in UEFA's association club coefficient rankings, which earns a "European Performance Spot" (EPS).

As explained by the Premier League, UEFA calculates which two leagues will be rewarded with an extra Champions League place by adding up coefficient points based on the performances of clubs from each league across the Champions League, Europa League and UEFA Conference League.

It means the various leagues are competing with each other in a ranking called the "association club coefficient".

Every win for a club in any of UEFA's club competitions this season earns each league two points, while a draw gets one point, and there are no points for a defeat.

On top of that, bonus points are awarded according to where each club finish in their European league table. These are weighted according to the competition. For example, finishing top of the table in the Champions League gets you 12 bonus points, while finishing top of the Europa League gets you six, and the top team in the Conference League get four.

Additional bonus points are awarded for reaching each round from the last 16 onwards. These are also weighted according to the competition.

Manchester United.
Ruben Amorim's Man United are counting on Europa League to seal Champions League qualification.

Further, there is a possibility of having up to seven Premier League clubs in the Champions League next season as the winners of this season’s competition and the Europa League winners will all qualify directly.

Assuming the Champions League and Europa League winners are Premier League clubs who do not finish in the top five this season, both of them will play in the competition in 2025-26, increasing the number of English sides to seven.

With Arsenal all but guaranteed to finish in the top five, this will only happen if Aston Villa, who play Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-final, go on to win the Champions League and fail to finish in the top five in the Premier League.

The other additional slot will come from the Europa League if either Manchester United or Tottenham Hotspur go on to win the competition as they are out of contention for a place in the top five with the Red Devils in 13th place ahead of 14th-placed Spurs.

United face French club Lyon in the Europa League quarter-final while Tottenham have a date with Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt at the same stage.
