FKF Vice President Doris Petra has warned Kisumu that they risk missing out on major tournaments in future if they do not change their behaviour.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Vice President Doris Petra has warned football fans in Kisumu that they risk jeopardizing the chances of the city hosting bigger tournaments in the future if they do not behave well.

Petra was commenting on an incident on Tuesday when fans invaded the pitch following Junior Stars’ penalty shootout win over Tanzania at the ongoing CECAFA U18 Boys Championships.

Fans turned out in large numbers at the Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Kisumu on Tuesday to witness Kenya’s Junior Stars take on Tanzania for a place in the final and had to endure a tense time as both teams played out a goalless draw before the contest was settled on post-match penalties.

As Syphas Owuor scored the winning penalty for Kenya, relieved and jubilant fans poured onto the pitch and joined in the celebration, causing confusion among both sets of players and the technical bench members before they extended their party to the streets of Kisumu.

Now, Petra wants them to cease the behaviour immediately or risk missing out on future action with Kenya angling for CHAN 2024 and having won the rights for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

“We want more, we want CHAN to be brought here,” said Petra. “You remember when people talk of AFCON 2027, Kisumu is not in the plan. Now Kisumu is giving people a reason not to be given that tournament. We want to change that narrative.”

“We want better on the final day so that we can celebrate peacefully and get other tournaments. We want to bring both tournaments [CHAN and AFCON] to Kisumu because of the support we have received from the public.”

Kasarani and Nyayo stadia in Nairobi and Kipchoge Keino in Eldoret are the stadiums earmarked to host AFCON 2027 matches when Kenya co-hosts the tournament with Uganda and Tanzania although Kisumu and Kakamega governors voiced their discontent over their exclusion.

There have been promises from different quarters that the two towns might be given some matches although they could be in contention for the CHAN tournament instead if Kenya hosts the event.
