EXCLUSIVE: Why the CECAFA Kagame Cup and Senior Challenge Cup Are Unlikely to Take Place Ahead of CHAN 2024

Both the CECAFA Kagame Cup and the Dormant Senior Challenge Cups were supposed to be held in June and July as test tournaments ahead of CHAN 2024, but it is now looking unlikely due to a number of reasons.

The idea of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania jointly hosting the CECAFA Challenge Cup as a preparatory event for the African Nations Championships (CHAN) 2024was floated during the CECAFA Ordinary General Assembly held in Juba, South Sudan, on 22 January.

Nicholas Musonye, Chair of Kenya’s National Steering Committee for CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027, had previously alluded to the plan.

“During the CECAFA Congress in Juba last week, the three Local Organising Committees met on the sidelines and suggested we plan to host the CECAFA Challenge Cup in May or June,” Musonye said.

CECAFA Executive Director Auka Gecheo confirmed that the proposal was tabled but remained unresolved at the time.

“It was tabled but not resolved. The CECAFA Secretariat was tasked with reviewing the modalities and is expected to provide feedback within two weeks,” Gecheo stated.

Initially, CECAFA intended to host the Kagame Cup in June, followed by the reintroduction of the Senior Challenge Cup, which has been dormant since 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Both tournaments were to serve as test events ahead of CHAN 2024.

However, sources close to CECAFA have since confirmed that the focus has now shifted entirely to the successful delivery of CHAN, citing a number of logistical and operational constraints.

Unfinished Domestic Seasons Pose Major Challenge for Kagame Cup

The Kagame Cup, a club competition featuring league champions from CECAFA member countries, faces another stumbling block: Tanzania and Kenya’s domestic top flight  leagues are yet to conclude.

With league champions still undecided, time is quickly running out to organize, invite, and prepare teams for the regional showdown.

The idea behind the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup was to host it across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania as a dress rehearsal for the CHAN venues. However, that plan soon unraveled due to logistical issues.

CECAFA later recommended hosting the tournament in just one country to ease coordination. Kenya had intended to use Siaya Stadium and the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay for the event. Unfortunately, recent refurbishments—particularly at the latter stadium in preparation for Jamhuri Day celebrations—rendered the venues unavailable within the required timeline.

Focus Now Fully on CHAN 2024

Given the numerous setbacks—from unfinished league seasons and unresolved venue challenges to planning complexities—CECAFA appears to have made the strategic decision to prioritize the 2024 CHAN tournament.

While an official announcement has yet to be made, all signs now point to the Kagame Cup and Senior Challenge Cup being shelved for the remainder of the year, as efforts concentrate on ensuring CHAN 2024 is a resounding success.
