Brian Mandela: Harambee Stars defender awaits fate as Mamelodi Sundowns contract winds down

Kenyan defender Brian Onyango faces uncertainty at Mamelodi Sundowns as his contract nears expiration with no renewal talks underway.

With only two months left on his contract, Mamelodi Sundowns defender Brian Mandela is facing an uncertain future as there have been no talks regarding the extension of his tenure with the club.

The Kenyan international, whose contract expires in June, is yet to receive any indication from the club about his prospects, leaving both him and his representatives in a state of limbo.

Brian Mandela joined the Sundowns in 2020 after a stint with Maritzburg United. Despite his potential and previous contributions, Mandela has found himself on the periphery this season featuring minimally across various competitions.

He has appeared in only three Premier Soccer League (PSL) games, two CAF Champions League matches, a single African Football League game, and three other domestic cup games.

A source close to the situation at Sundowns conveyed to Soccer Laduma the complexity of Mandela's position at the club.

"Brian Mandela's situation is one of the most tricky at the club right now. He doesn't know his future. He doesn't know whether he will be staying at the team or not. His current contract ends at the end of this season and looking at the way things are happening for him at the moment, I don't think they will keep him," the source revealed.

The uncertainty is compounded by the high competition for places in the Sundowns' defense, with players like Mosa Lebusa, Grant Kekana, and Mothobi Mvala vying for starting roles.

The source added, "There are a lot of defenders in his position, and they can't be keeping him for another season. He is not the only one in such a situation. There are other players as well who really don't know what's happening with them."

Furthermore, a second source mentioned that while the club had an option to extend Mandela's contract for two years at the end of his last contract period, they only exercised a one-year extension.

"The one year they exercised was to see what will happen this season with other defenders, but now it seems it's clear they won't be exercising the other one-year option. They are just waiting for the season to finish then they will make decisions on all the players whose contracts are coming to an end including Brian (Mandela). So, for now, he doesn't know his future as there are no talks at all involving him," noted the source.

As the season approaches its climax Mandela's future at Sundowns remains in jeopardy.

With no discussions underway and a competitive squad to contend with, the 29-year-old defender must prepare for all possibilities including seeking opportunities elsewhere to continue his professional career.
