The Government has officially handed over Kasarani Stadium to the 2024 CHAN Local Organising Comitee ahead of the continental showpiece.

Kenya has reached a major milestone in its preparations for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) after officially handing over the refurbished Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, to the tournament’s Local Organizing Committee (LOC).

The handover was presided over by Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, who was joined by CHAN LOC chairman Nicholas Musonye, as the country intensifies final preparations to co-host the tournament with Uganda and Tanzania from August 2 to 30.

Kasarani, one of Kenya’s most iconic stadiums, has been extensively upgraded to meet Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards.

The venue will host all four of Harambee Stars’ Group A fixtures, as well as the CHAN final on August 30. Speaking during the inspection tour, Mvurya confirmed that the stadium is ready for action:

“We have seen all areas critical for CHAN and I am happy to say that the work is now complete,” he said.

“We have a sound system, you can see the screens have been fitted, and the changing rooms are ready. The pitch is in good standard and today we are handing it over to the Local Organizing Committee for them to do other things related to CHAN.”

Mvurya further gave updates on Kenya’s broader infrastructure readiness.

“Ulinzi has been finalized, and Nyayo has work that should be completed in the next two weeks,” he confirmed.

The Kasarani upgrades include the installation of large LED screens, a CAF requirement that will be used for VAR, replays, and in-stadium communication.

Inside the stadium, work has been completed on key operational facilities such as the VAR room, anti-doping center, media centre and tribune, and players’ lounges.

The venue now features six fully-equipped changing rooms, exceeding CAF’s minimum requirement, with additional rooms designated for match officials and ball boys.

Kasarani’s modernized floodlights, which meet CAF’s luminance standards of 1,200–2,000 lux, have also been tested and approved, with power backup systems in place.

Safety signage has been installed throughout the venue to assist with crowd movement, and a newly extended roof canopy now offers full coverage for both the upper and lower tiers, enhancing weather protection for fans.

Spectator areas have been overhauled with backrest seats across regular stands, while VIP sections at Gates 1, 2, and 24 now feature foldable premium seats. The surrounding stadium landscape has received a visual uplift as well, with mature greenery and flowering adding to its aesthetic appeal.

The facility was initially slated for handover by June 25, but Mvurya had projected a final date of June 30, a target that has now officially been met.

“This is a proud moment not just for sports in Kenya, but for the country as a whole. Kasarani is ready, and Kenya is ready,” Mvurya stated.

With CHAN 2024 now just weeks away, the completion and handover of Kasarani Stadium represents a strong signal of Kenya’s commitment and readiness to deliver a world-class continental tournament.

All eyes now turn to the pitch, as Kenya prepares to welcome Africa’s top home-based football talent to its upgraded national arena.
