Nairobi United stunned Gor Mahia 2-1 in the FKF Cup final to make history by becoming the first side in history to lift the title before even making a single top flight appearance.
Nairobi United continued their fairytale run in the FKF Cup on Sunday afternoon, stunning heavyweights Gor Mahia 2-1 at the Ulinzi Sports Complex to secure a historic double and a coveted place in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup.
From the first whistle, Nairobi United looked up for the task, launching into the game with fire and intent. Their early pressure paid off in just the 6th minute when Frank Owia produced an acrobatic finish after a long throw-in wreaked havoc in the Gor Mahia box.
The ball bounced around dangerously before Owia’s overhead strike left goalkeeper Kevin Omondi rooted to the spot.

'She Showed That I Should Have Stayed Longer' – Usain Bolt Pays Heartfelt Tribute to Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce
Usain Bolt paid a touching tribute to Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, admitting her enduring greatness made him feel he retired too soon.
Nairobi United nearly made it two when Dancun Omalla robbed Enock Morrison off the ball and passed it out wide to Owia, who attempted a shot from distance, but it leaned straight into the palms of Kevin Omondi.
In the 19th minute, Gor Mahia got their first shot on target when Alpha Onyango attempted a shot from near the halfway line that forced Nairobi United goalkeeper Ernest Muhammed.
Gor Mahia started gaining momentum and started creating more chances, and would equalise through Ben Stanley Omondi, who netted his first ever goal for the club.
Sharrif Musa crossed the ball into the box which was poorly cleared away by the Nairobi United defence, which allowed the on-loan midfielder to strike the ball beautifully into the back of the net.
Both sides went into the break with the tie level at 1-1.
Second Half
In the second half, the game started to become more end to end, with both sides having an equal share of possession. Nairobi United had the first attempt at goal when Duncan Omala got on the end of an Isaac Omweri floated cross from deep but his header went way off the target.

‘Top Class Facility’ - Michael Olunga Thrilled as His Multi-Million Complex Takes Shape
Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga has expressed his excitement at the speed at which his state-of-the-art sports complex is coming up in Homa Bay County.
This prompted Gor Mahia coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno into making his first change of the match. Charles Bbale and Bryson Wangai came on for Shariff Musa and goalscorer Omondi. Both substitutes almost made an immediate impact.
Wangai received the ball from the left and cut inside with it to set up Ausin Odhiambo, who found Bbale on the other flank, but the Ugandan forward, playing as an inverted right winger, saw his left footed attempt sail just wide off the target.
Gor Mahia nearly found the back of the net in the 60th minute from a freekick, with Odhiambo attempting a clever low-drilled shot that nearly forced Nairobi United keeper Ernest Muhammed into fumbling it into the back of the net.
Nicholas Muyoti was also forced into making double changes, subbing off Isaac Omweri and Bernard Ouma for Brian Ogutu and Brian Magari in the 69th minute, with Omweri, who had been relatively quiet all afternoon on the risk of being sent off for a second bookable offence after appearing to be rattled, having already seen yellow only two minutes earlier.

Kishane Thompson: Why Jamaican Sprinter is Unimpressed Despite Clocking Fastest Time Since 2015
Despite becoming the sixth-fastest man in the world, Kishane Thompson believes he has more to give.
Those changes would be effective, as Nairobi United would restore their lead in the 72nd minute through Enock Mashaka with a belter of a shot from distance, stunning the Gor Mahia faithful in the process.
This caused panic waves to transmit through the whole Gor Mahia set up, who started huffing and puffing in efforts to find an equaliser, and Alpha Onyango nearly equalised for Gor Mahia when he got on the end of a good cross from deep by Bryson Wangai, which went agonisingly wide.
However, their never-say attitude eventually bore fruit as Austin Odhiambo won a penalty after being fouled in the box, but the resulting penalty by Alpha Onyango was expertly saved by Alpha Onyango, and now Nairobi United would dare to dream.
The final whistle confirmed it: Nairobi United had completed a historic FKF Cup triumph, toppling Kenyan football royalty and booking a ticket to the continental stage.
