Nairobi United made history by becoming the second side since Mathare United to win the FKF Cup while still an NSL side by thumping Gor Mahia 2-1 on Sunday.

Nairobi United head coach Nicholas Muyoti has revealed the four key ingredients that powered his team to a shock 2-1 victory over Kenyan football giants Gor Mahia in the FKF Cup final held at Ulinzi Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Having joined the club midway through the season from Nairobi City Stars, Muyoti has quickly turned Nairobi United into a formidable force. Under his leadership, the team not only secured the National Super League (NSL) title and automatic promotion to the FKF Premier League, but also claimed the FKF Cup — a historic double that booked them a place in the 2024/25 CAF Confederation Cup.

Reflecting on the achievement exclusively to Pulse Sports, Muyoti was full of praise for the collective effort behind the club’s fairytale run.

“I am grateful to God. These boys have done an amazing job. They were hungry for this trophy and they got it,” he said.

He credited the triumph to four major factors:

The unwavering hunger of his players: Muyoti highlighted the strong desire from his squad to make history and compete for silverware as a driving force behind their performance.

Solid technical and management support: “We have worked together as a technical team and they have supported us. The management has also been behind us,” he said, underlining the unity behind the scenes.

Fan support that eclipsed Gor Mahia’s: In a surprising twist, Muyoti claimed that Nairobi United’s fans "outsung Gor Mahia’s army," providing a morale boost that helped his side stay motivated throughout the final.

Spiritual grounding and belief in God: Muyoti emphasized the role of faith in the team’s journey: “The players believe in God. They put Him first and that is why we are grateful for what we were able to get.”

The former Kenyan international also drew inspiration from technical director Ali Salim Ramadhan,  who previously won the FKF Cup as a player with Mathare United even before the club sealed promotion to the top flight.

Interestingly, Nairobi United's technical director was also part of that same Mathare squad, and he used that experience to encourage the players to replicate the feat.

“He has been encouraging our players to break that history and become the second-ever group to do it,” Muyoti added.

Looking ahead, the coach stressed the need for strategic planning as the club prepares to compete in both the FKF Premier League and the CAF Confederation Cup.

“We have to sit down as both management and playing units. We will analyse the challenges we had and then figure out how to solve them to make it in the Premier League.”

From promotion to continental qualification, Nairobi United’s 2024 season will be remembered as one of the most remarkable rises in Kenyan football history. And at the heart of it is Nicholas Muyoti — a coach who brought belief, structure, and spirit to a team that dared to dream.
