FKFPL: AFC Leopards face Sofapaka as Shabana aim to dispatch Posta in FKF Premier League reboot after pulsating FIFA international break

Festus Chuma 13:00 - 22.11.2023

AFC Leopards prepares to take on Sofapaka as the FKF Premier League resumes with five matches in total on Saturday.

The Football Kenya Federation Premier League is set to make a thrilling comeback this weekend after a ten-day international break, and football enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating some mouth-watering fixtures across various venues.

On Saturday, twelve-time champions AFC Leopards will square off against Sofapaka at Machakos, and this match is among the televised highlights of the weekend.

AFC Leopards faced a challenging season so far, with only one win, six draws, and three losses from their 11 matches.

Their biggest challenge has been scoring, managing just seven goals in the league. In their last league outing against table leaders Posta Rangers, they salvaged a 1-1 draw.

Ingwe's coach, Tomas Trucha, is aware of the scoring issue and is looking to address it.

"My football is to control the game, to use the wings. Three years ago, I had [Caleb] Olilo, [Jafari] Owiti, who is still here, so I like to play on the wings, but now, opponents are defending against our wingers so we need to have good wingers," he mentioned.

AFC Leopards fans will be looking to Brian Yakhama and Victor Omune to lead the attack and secure their second win of the season.

Sofapaka, on the other hand, enters the match on a low note, having suffered a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Kakamega Homeboyz before the league's break.

This result extended their winless run in the league to three matches. Coach Ezekeil Akwana will be banking on lead striker Fiston Razak, who featured for Burundi in two of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, to step up and help turn things around.

Sofapaka finds themselves at the bottom of the league standings with just seven points from 11 matches, conceding a whopping 19 goals, highlighting their defensive struggles.

In another exciting clash, Bidco United will welcome Tusker FC at Kasarani Annex.

Bidco will be eager to return to winning ways after a disappointing 3-0 loss to KCB FC, marking their second loss of the season. They currently sit eighth in the FKF Premier League standings with 19 points.

Nairobi City Stars and Kariobangi Sharks will face off in the late fixture at Annex, with both teams eager to get back to winning ways.

City Stars are 13th on the league table with 12 points, while Sharks occupy the 12th position with 13 points.

Tusker, fresh from a 1-0 win against City Stars, will look to secure their second consecutive victory. The star-studded Tusker side has shown promise but is yet to hit top gear, with four wins and six draws from their matches.

Robert Matano's charges are currently in 10th place on the standings, with just three points separating them from Bidco.

Both teams have no suspension concerns coming into this clash, with Bidco set to welcome Douglas Mokaya back from a one-match suspension.

Over in Machakos, Posta Rangers will host Shabana FC in what is expected to be an explosive match at Kenyatta Stadium.

Despite being at the top, Posta Rangers have faced a winless streak in their last three matches, with their most recent outing resulting in a 1-1 draw against AFC Leopards.

After a fantastic run of five straight wins between September and October, Posta Rangers have managed just one victory in their last five games. Shabana, on the other hand, recently returned to winning ways by defeating Nzoia Sugar 2-1.

John Kamau, the coach of Posta Rangers, acknowledged the challenges of fatigue.

"After eight, nine games, we expect a lot of tired legs, and I think the depth is not good, but we will bounce back," he said

Posta Rangers are focused on their own performance and destiny. Shabana currently occupies the 14th spot on the league standings, 12 points behind Posta Rangers.

In Mombasa, Bandari will host FC Talanta at Mbaraki Stadium, with the dockers, under coach John Baraza, seeking their seventh win of the season.

Bandari is riding high on a three-match winning streak, having won their last game against Kariobangi Sharks 2-0.

Talanta, on the other hand, is aiming for their third consecutive victory after a 2-0 win against Muhoroni in their last outing.

Currently, Ken Kenyatta's charges are placed seventh on the standings with 17 points, while Bandari sits in fifth place with 18 points.
