Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has urged Manchester United to retain one young player whose time at the club has been disappointing.
Former Manchester United coach Benni McCarthy has urged the club to show patience with young striker Rasmus Hojlund, insisting the 22-year-old has the potential to become a top player.
Speaking to betonlinepromocodes.com, McCarthy, who worked alongside Erik ten Hag during his first two years at Old Trafford, drew on his personal experience with the Danish forward.
"I've worked with Rasmus personally, and he's great," McCarthy stated as quoted by ManUNews. "He's got all the attributes to become a top player. With time and the right guidance, including the right manager, he can elevate his game, especially if a team plays to his strengths. He's a player with a lot going for him who could make players around him better."

McCarthy further emphasised Hojlund's value, adding, "You learn things about players that you sign, and he’ll be able to take you far. He’s a fantastic lad, and you don’t let those kinds of players go. For me, you should stick with Hojlund."

Acknowledging the pressure surrounding Hojlund's price tag and his modest return of four Premier League goals last season, McCarthy urged patience. "I know people are disappointed with him because of his price tag, but he’s young," he explained. "Some players are slow burners, but once things click, he’s got everything. He’s got the attitude, the mentality, the physique – everything. They need to give him a chance, and he will come good."
Following a disappointing 2024/25 campaign, current United manager Ruben Amorim is under pressure to deliver immediate results. This has led to speculation that Hojlund could be sold to make way for a more established goalscorer. Amorim's reported preference is his former Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres, though the player is currently leaning towards a move to Arsenal.
Other potential targets include Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins and Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike. However, any incoming transfers are likely dependent on the potential sales of several United forwards, including Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Alejandro Garnacho.
