Three solid reasons why Gor Mahia are likely to falter in the title race amidst competition from Police and Tusker.

The 2024/25 Football Kenya Federation Premier League is a hotly-contested affair with three teams fighting to win the covered title.

Amidst the buzz and hype that surrounds the race for the gong, Police and Tusker are looking to dethrone third-placed Gor Mahia from the title.

Tusker last won the league title two seasons ago under the guidance of experienced tactician Robert Matano, who has since had spells with Sofapaka and is currently attached to a Tanzanian club.

Police on the other hand are new in the title race. The law enforcers, who currently lead the standings with 58 points with three matches left, are enjoying their best season to date after gaining promotion to the top tier three seasons ago.

Defending champions Gor Mahia have found the going tough this season. With 53 points to their name and a game in hand, Gor Mahia will still be two points behind Police should they beat rivals AFC Leopards in the postponed Mashemeji Derby.

Pulse Sports brings you reasons why it looks likely Gor Mahia will falter in the race for the title.

1. Inconsistency

Gor Mahia's season is one to forget considering that the record champions have blown hot and cold in the current campaign.

City Stars, fighting to avoid relegation to the Division One league, completed a double against Gor Mahia after claiming a 2-1 win in October and denting K'Ogallo's hopes with a vital victory on Thursday by the same scoreline.

Worse for Gor Mahia, they managed a three points against Bidco United, the whipping boys in the league who are destined to be relegated.

The 2-1 loss to Nairobi City Stars in October kick-started a three-march winless run that included a 2-2 all draw with newbies Murang'a SEAL and the 2-0 loss against Bandari at Mbaraki.

Gor Mahia have dropped more points to teams in the bottom half of the table than any of his rivals.

2. Goal-Scoring Woes

Gor Mahia's biggest problem this season has been lack of a lethal finisher. Ironically, K'Ogallo currently boast attacking midfielder Austin Odhiambo as their top scorer despite missing many matches due to injury.

Odhiambo has nine goals to his name, to rank eighth in the top-scoring charts. Gideon Bendeka who was signed at the start of the season and has been mostly utilised from the bench, has found the back of the net on six occasions.

The return of Benson Omalla was heralded as a turning point for K'Ogallo but the hawk-eyed striker is yet to hit dizzying heights that made him the first name on the team sheet prior to his departure to Lebanese side Safa SC.

3. Internal wrangles

This season has seen a lot of reports pointing at divisions with the team. Early this season, former coach Leonardo Neiva was rescued from irate fans who stormed the stadium and wanted to beat him up after another result that went against the wishes of the fans.

His replacement, Sinica Mihic, reportedly fell out with his technical bench and a few weeks ago, the Croat threatened to drop Austin Odhiambo for failing to play according to his script.

Off the field issues have affected Gor Mahia even as chairman Ambrose Rachier recently stepped in to cool down the tension in a bid to try salvage the team's season.

These issues are unheard of at Tusker and Police although the pair have challenges of their own, they are always settled without being leaked out to the media.
