Tusker boss reveals secret weapon charges have that will give them edge over Gor Mahia, Kenya Police in FKF title race

Tusker boss Charles Okere has outlined the special weapon his side possesses that will give them an edge over Gor Mahia and Kenya Police in the final four games of the season in order to clinch the 2024/2025 FKF Premier League title.

Tusker who last won the FKF Premier League title in 2022 -although that season was voided by the federation following the year-long ban imposed by FIFA on the country’s football, will be hoping this is the year they can finally break that duck, especially after beating Murang’a Seal 2-0 in Machakos on Saturday.

The Brewers, who have been blowing hot and cold in the second leg of the campaign, were six points off the pace before the match got underway.

However, the beer makers were out not to allow the gap between them and the Law Enforcers to widen, as they capitalised on their chances and Seal's poor form to bag maximum points.

Goals from Ugandan striker Deogratious Ojok in the 12th minute and former Seal midfielder Erick Balecho early in the second half ensured Tusker stayed in the title race, closing the gap to table-toppers Kenya Police and defending champions Gor Mahia.

Okere’s men went into the match trailing by six points, but their efficient performance kept their hopes of reclaiming the crown very much alive.

Speaking after the match, Okere praised his team’s discipline and planning, attributing their success to tactical consistency and mental resilience.

“I thank God for these three crucial points because we had been longing to get them on top of a clean sheet,” he said. “We planned for the game very well and I congratulate both the players and the technical bench.”

Okere revealed that a controversial 0-0 draw against AFC Leopards—where Ian Simiyu had a late winner wrongly ruled out for offside—served as a key learning moment.

How AFC Leopards draw motivated charges

“The match against AFC Leopards was a motivation because we played according to the plan,” Okere stated.

“We said we needed to pick up from where we left off. Murang’a Seal is strong, tactical and resilient, they also wanted all the three points, but we thank God we got them.”

Despite critics suggesting that Tusker’s position in the title race is more a result of other teams’ inconsistencies than their own quality, Okere was quick to dismiss that narrative.

“It is not by luck. We have worked very hard in training and we knew we had to get as many goals as possible. It is motivating that even bench players can score goals,” he said firmly.

With just four games remaining in the campaign, Okere stressed the importance of strategic rotation and recovery, especially as midweek fixtures begin to pile up.

“It is a very tricky situation. Playing on the weekend and midweek again is not easy, but it needs good planning.

“We have a few knocks here and there, but we hope that by the time we approach the Talanta game, we will be fresh enough for that game.”

In a league season that has seen both Kenya Police and Gor Mahia stumble at crucial moments, Tusker’s “special weapon”—a blend of tactical discipline, mental strength, and impact from the bench—could be what makes the difference when the dust finally settles.
